US hydrogen specialist Plug Power and eFuel producer Arcadia eFuels have agreed a strategic partnership to develop large-scale industrial production facilities for synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF). The partnership kicks off with the planned ENDOR project in Denmark, for which Plug Power is set to supply electrolysers with a total capacity of 280 megawatts.
The electrolysers are to produce hydrogen using renewable electricity, which will then be combined with captured CO₂ to produce synthetic fuels. Using the power-to-liquid process, this is to yield eSAF, which can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in aviation. The planned electrolysis capacity of 280 MW illustrates the industrial scale of the project in Denmark.
However, the collaboration extends beyond the Danish project: Plug Power has been selected as the preferred technology partner for further eSAF projects by Arcadia with a planned total electrolysis capacity of more than one gigawatt. For now, this is a strategic agreement, not capacity that has already been installed or a final investment decision.
For the ENDOR project, Arcadia eFuels has already concluded a long-term offtake agreement with energy company Uniper. It covers the planned supply of up to 40,000 tonnes of eSAF per year. The partnership between Plug Power and Arcadia thus also firms up the planned hydrogen supply for the Danish production site.
